The Power of Rearranging – A new look for an old room

Hi, Peeps! Although some of my friends are still dealing with snow – and I do send them all of my sympathies – we here in South are enjoying mostly 60+ temps! I mentioned the other day that we were even able to get a bit of camping in last weekend to finish off Spring Break. I My kids are counting down the days to summer vacation – the last count was 40 school days left! But until then, it’s business as usual and planning for upcoming birthdays.

Around the house, although I do have one or two more projects to show you, we’ve finally moved out of the bathroom and onto bigger and better things! We have some problem areas to choose from, like the downstairs powder room, the laundry room, the remainder of our bedroom, the master bathroom, the sun room. The main rooms, such as the kitchen and living room have received lots and lots of love, but the other rooms, only a little love, leaving much room for improvement. Although we did some work on the bedrooms a few years ago, one room, in particular, needed some re-work as it were – my daughter’s room, or what we used to call the “zebra print room” affectionately.

When we first redecorated her room, she was really into zebra print – now, not so much. Honestly, though, that wasn’t the problem – the layout was.

We’d added some cool features, such as built-in shelving surrounding her bed, and window seats with built-in storage, along with the cutest little desk ever that she just loved, complete with an over-stuffed zebra print chair, but that didn’t make up for the lack of floor space. Although she’s not really in a play stage of life, she is in more of a hang-out-on-the-floor-looking-at-mags-and-having-fun-sleepovers stage of life.. you need floor space to do any of that. She had none.

So. It’s time for a change! Here is the crude floor plan for the new layout, with some of my planned changes or additions:

The room is 10’5″ x 9’5″ – not exactly palace standards. I used a fun and free tool that I found online at Floorplanner.com to lay things out. We removed a few pieces of furniture – a large wardrobe that sat caddy corner and held sweaters, etc.former, one of the window chests, and a small table that sat beside her desk.

We put added the bedside table, which has large drawers. This will provide a little more storage. We kept one of the window chests and moved it to the end of her bed. We moved the bed and plan to replace the headboard with a tufted one in the future. We’re also keeping the dip-dyed ruched duvet but attempt to dye it to match the color scheme she’s going for – teal and plum.

We kept her dresser exactly where and as it was. We kept the built-ins, but will need to repair them – we had left two shelves out to act as a bed side table – they’ll need to be added back in.

For now, we moved her desk, but we’re replacing her desk with a custom made desk that will take advantage of the ample space and built-in storage, and add a PB Teen Style Tile Knockoff above it, as well as painting a focal point above the desk. .

To give her some storage back that she lost by removing the wardrobe, we’ll need to build a closet organizer – did I mention that she has a teeny, tiny closet as well, with a slanted roof over half of it’s ginormous 48″ width? Uh huh. That’ll be fun!

We’re replacing the light, but leaving the fan, and we’ll be adding a few fun finishes, such as DIY  multi-canvas artwork, new window treatments and adding a rug. I’m so excited!

To reiterate, this is what we’ll be doing, with the re-arranging off the list!

Although there is MUCH to do, the rearranging itself made such a huge difference. She has floor space!
