How to Create a Beautiful {Easy and Cheap} Red White and Blue Tablescape

Independence Day is coming up fast, which means an opportunity to pull out the red white and blue again! It’s my favorite time of year to get together with family and friends and celebrate the birth of this fantastic country.

red white and blue

Usually, our entire family (all 20+ of us!) spend the holiday at my mother and father-in-law’s home, swimming, stuffing ourselves with pie, burgers, playing corn hole and enjoying the day together. Even though we don’t spend the day at our home, it’s always fun for me to put together a table we can all enjoy before the big day, so you know I was excited to be invited to participate in  a Red White and Blue Tablescape Blog Hop, hosted by Chloe of Celebrate and Decorate.

If you’re anything like me, you probably love the look of a beautiful, 4th of July Patriotic tablescape, but don’t want to spend a whole lot of money or time putting one together. I feel the same way and thought I’d share a few ideas with you that I use, such as shopping my own home, hitting the dollar store and throwing together a few easy DIYs, such as these adorable cutlery pouches with printable labels. If you like them, download the tags for free by clicking here.

How to Create a Beautiful {Easy and Cheap} Red White and Blue Tablescape

Decide on a Color Scheme

red white and blue - whole table-horizontal2

This is an easy one for a patriotic table in America – red white and blue – but in your corner of the world, it might be different. Here, I stuck with traditional colors and patterns but used muted tones and natural fabrics to tone everything down. Having too much of a good thing is possible! I left the table natural, which I often do, and went with an everyday burlap table runner, which kept my cheap inexpensive accents from looking too kitschy.

Shop both your home and the dollar store for items that can be reused and repurposed

Balloon weights and star garden stakes from the dollar store work perfectly together to create an indoor fireworks place card.

Pair everyday dinnerware with decorative salad plates or colorful napkins to fit your theme

If you follow me at all, you’ll know that I often use our basic white stoneware for tablescapes – I LOVE looking back at all the different ways I’ve been able to use them!

red white and blue - setting

In this case, I decided to change up my chargers and gave gold, dollar tree chargers a quick Kate Spade-inspired makeover with spray paint and acrylic paint dots. The dots add another dimension to the all-white place setting.

The napkins are cotton tea towels found in the Target dollar aisle – don’t be afraid to mix and match and to use things different than intended.

Use food as decor

You’ll serve food at your party, so, why not use that food as decor – it’s inexpensive, practical and gorgeous!

A simple punch made of ginger ale and frozen berries served in a mason jar jug adds color and texture.

red white and blue - drinks

Cupcakes in red polka-dotted liners and rocket ice pops in shaved ice are perfect desserts and table accents!

Are you serving food that isn’t in your color scheme? Try serving your hot dogs, fries, and corn on the cob in red check wax paper to rectify that situation instantly!

Mix and match patterns for a fun, eclectic look

red white and blue - place cards

Stripes, dots, stars all go together to create a fun, eclectic look. To make this work, be sure your colors are cohesive.

In short:

  1. Decide on a color scheme
  2. Shop both your home and the dollar store for items that can be reused and repurposed
  3. Use everyday dinnerware, but add salad plates or colorful napkins to fit your theme
  4. Use food as decor
  5. Mix and match patterns for a fun, eclectic look

That’s it! I’d love to know your favorite tips for entertaining. Do you use disposable supplies (perfectly acceptable!) or do you throw a few things together and hope that it turns out (like I do!)

How to Make a Beautiful Fascinator Hat for Under $10

Do you need a fancy Fascinator hat for an upcoming Kentucky Derby Party or the next Royal wedding? Learn here how you can make one for around $10!

fascinator

So, how many of you watched the Royal Wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle?! I didn’t get up extra early to watch, but you can bet I tuned in once I was awake! I loved seeing all of the fairytale details – The simple, elegant dress! The floral arch at the chapel! The horse-drawn carriage, taking the newlyweds to the castle! The hats and fascinators!

In case you don’t know, a fascinator is a small, flamboyant hat or hairpiece, usually featuring feathers that flutter and move with the wearer fascinatingly – hence, the name. I learned while watching the wedding and listening to the commentary, that fascinators can run anywhere from a $200-$thousands-plus! What?! I’m here to tell you, if you want to sport a fascinator for the next Royal Wedding or Derby Party that you may attend, you can make a fascinator in one afternoon to match any outfit or occasion. Let me show you how!

How to Make a Fascinator

fascinator_materials

Materials

I didn’t use all of these items, but I wasn’t sure WHAT I was going to use, so I gathered it all! I ended up using the following:

  • Scrap fabric
  • Small paper plate
  • Tulle
  • Deco-mesh
  • Ribbon
  • An alligator hair clip
  • A needle and thread
  • A hot glue gun
  • A large flower

Optional Items

  • Feathers
  • A Button, Brooch, Cameo, butterfly embellishment, or other kinds of focal points
  • A hair comb or hair barrette

What to do

Create the Hat Base

fascinator_make_base

Cut out the inner circle of your paper plate, then cut a slit from the outer edge of the disc into the center. You wear a fascinator towards the back of the head. If you want to wear your hat towards the front of your head, cut out an oblong piece of cardboard.

Overlap the cut ends of the cardboard circle so that you get a small cardboard mound. Check for size, adjust if necessary, then glue the ends together.

Add the Hat Lining

fascinator_coverbase_cutcircles

Cut out two circles of fabric, with one being about .5″ wider than hat base, and the other being .25″ less than the hat base.

fascinator_coverbase

Carefully hot glue the larger circle of fabric to the TOP of the hat base by gluing the edge onto the underside of the cardboard, pulling taut as you go. I found it easiest to notch the outer edge first.

Glue the smaller circle to the underside of the hat base around the fabric edge, pulling taut, and trim any excess fabric that falls over the side of the base. This will have the smaller circle pulling away from the underside of the base.

Add a clip

fascinator_coverbase_addalligatorclip

You will need to attach something underneath your fascinator that will allow you to keep it clipped into your hair. A hot-glued alligator clip, hairpin or barrette attached to the underside will do the trick! Alligator clips are those clips that your hairstylist uses to keep your hair pinned up. You can find them at a craft store or a beauty supply store.

Add Deco-mesh

Cut a 12″ cross-section of the mesh from the roll. All I had was a larger roll, but if you are lucky enough to have a ribbon sized roll, you’ll want your piece to be about 6″ long. Create a bow out of your deco-mesh and ensure that the loops of the bow are the same length as the tails. Pull it tight and secure the center knot with ribbon.

fascinator_decomesh

Hot glue the bow to the hat, looking in the mirror for the proper placement.

fascinator_decomesh_attachtohat

Cut through the loop ends and fray the edges.

fascinator_decomesh_frayedges

Add ribbon stems to fill in any gaps. For this hat, I tied 4 or 5 pieces of ribbon into bows then cut through the loops before gluing them into place.

fascinator_decomesh_ribbonembellishments

Add Embellishments

Attach your flower with hot glue and arrange the deco mesh pieces around it. This is also the time you would add any other embellishments you might like.

fascinator_decomesh_addflowerandfray

fascinator_completed

Clip the fascinator on your head, put on your best dress and prepare to fascinate!

fascinator_completed_modelled

See, that was easy, right? Okay, so you probably can’t wear it to a Royal Wedding because, well, it’s frowned upon to crash one of those, but you can certainly wear it to your next Derby Party! So, get yourself to the craft store and make your fascinator! And if you bump into Harry and Meghan, tell them I say hi!

Oodles of Pineapple Home Decor for Pineapple Lovers

Posted in DECOR, SUMMER: SEASONAL DECOR AND CRAFTS
on May 25, 2018
If you’re a fellow pineapple lover, today is your lucky day. I’m sharing the 40 of my favorite pineapple home decor products for every room in your house!

pineapple home decor
During the most recent round of the One Room Challenge, I made over one of our teen daughter’s bedroom from an outdated, tiny closet of a room, into an updated boho bedroom dream! Said daughter is a huge pineapple lover. One of the requests she made for her room – pineapple home decor! I also love pineapples and have done a craft project or two around the fruit. I can’t say I blame her for loving them – there is just something so sweet and summery about this tropical fruit and these days pineapple decor is EVERYWHERE.
During the make-over, I put in a lot of time sourcing pineapple decor for the home and thought I’d share some of what I found. I had NO idea, so many pineapple-shaped home accent options existed – can you say pineapple diffuser or speaker?
If you are a pineapple lover or know someone who is, this is the list for you!
