Hey, lovelies! Thanks so much for all of the love on my simple DIY Halloween shirt. How is it that Halloween is just a few days away?!

Time is flying by.. especially in One Room Challenge land! I can’t believe we are in week four! Ahhh!!

Although we’ve been working our hineys off, or maybe because we’ve been working our hineys off – and because we celebrated not only our anniversary AND hosted our annual Halloween party – I’m a week behind in sharing my progress! I’m playing catch-up this week with progress from week three and four!

In week one we shared our ideas for making over our room. Week two,   we talked about our plan to bring a little bit of bling and drama to our 22’x13′ space.  The past two weeks we started putting some of our plans into action! Finally!
Although the room is hardly looking complete, We’ve made a good start on many things. We spent a good deal of our time last week opening and finishing off an attic space directly off of the room we are working on. The attic space is quite large – about 22’x 10′ – and has a window in it. It’s always bugged me to no end that we had nearly an entire room in our house on the other side of the wall that we couldn’t use!
Too, we have to go in there every year, and to date, it’s been a bit challenging. With no floor and the door a size that would make even a Smurf have to duck not to hit his head, it’s always an adventure to put out the wreaths on our windows every Christmas!
That was the first order of business – enlarging the door. My design called for Board and Batten trim on the walls, and I wanted to hide the new larger door within the wall treatment.
After cutting a larger hole in the wall. The size being determined by the board and batten trim plan, I popped inside, balancing on the joists and went about planning where and how I could put up some useable storage. To cut down on costs, I decided to close up half of the attic, blocking it so that no curious monkeys could explore the length of it and end up falling through the ceiling. The other half would receive a basic floor and wall paneling to cover the insulation. I’d planned to leave the trusses running across the attic and just work them into my plan for shelving, but it was going to be a bit difficult to move around in there. Difficult or no, I was willing to do what needed to be done to find a place to house our various monopoly and operation games. Imagine my surprise when Shay commented with “You know.. I bet we could just move those trusses and put a support beam in. They aren’t supporting the roof, just this wall.” Squeal!

We got to work, removing three trusses and relocating them on the other side of the door. We added a support beam to ensure the integrity of the ceiling. Next came the floor, light with a pull-cord, and finally the paneling. Our doorway is still relatively small, and we did end up having to cut our panels for both the flooring and the walls before putting them through, but not until after we’d gotten them good and stuck.

You can’t blame us for trying.



The new door was made with a piece of 3/4″ plywood, with basic brass hinges. To ensure the door would be hidden within the board and batten, I added a spring-loaded magnet closure. The closure was inexpensive and just perfect for what I need!


I’m so happy with how this little-unexpected project turned out. We didn’t know how much we needed the storage until we had it!


In other news, we’re working our way around the room, installing the board and batten trim.

We’ve added the built-in, something of a floating console table, over and behind where the sofa will eventually be.

Speaking of couches, the sofa is hopefully going to arrive in just a few days! I hope!

The snack/wine bar is built and will be installed tomorrow.


I finally got a chance to try out my new paint sprayer graciously given to me by Wagner. I think I’m pretty much in love and-and beyond graceful for their sponsorship. Just thinking of painting all of that trim by hand is enough to make me want to eat an entire batch of cookies.

All in all, it’s been a productive few weeks, despite the fact that I didn’t cross anything off my list – at least not something that was on it originally! Ah well, I’m going with it. Here is where we are at:

  1.  Built-in storage bench seating with bookshelves
  2.  Add a built-in snack bar with wine and spirits area
  3.  Add a built-in Media cabinet for a TV and other components
  4.  Create an organized craft-supply closet
  5. Bold geometric wallpaper
  6. Board and Batten wall trim throughout
  7. Dart Board
  8. Black Gloss Ceiling
  9. Convertible sofa or sofa bed
  10. Move and re-felt the pool table
  11. Finish attic space to act as storage and a fun secret hide-out

Historically, this is the week that I start to panic and fall apart a bit. I’m pretty good in stressful situations – at least until I find myself in multiple stressful situations at the same time, which is the case these days. Calgon, Take me away!

    I have dreams sometimes about finding a new room in my house! And you actually created one (even if it's small)! Great job and we are all going to pull our rooms off without ending up in the crazy house!
