stencil napkin tutorial

Hi Friends! In our family, we feast on two Thanksgiving dinners! Thanksgiving Day we spend at a fun family gathering with 30+ of my in-laws. But, first, we have dinner at home, dubbed Ca-merican Thanksgiving – Canadian and American – since we have some of each! Sometimes, it’s a bigger affair, but this year, it’s our family of 7+.

Our Thanksgiving Table + DIY Cloth Napkins (No Sew!)

Our DIY dining table seats twelve. We use it twice/year – once being Thanksgiving.  The dining room is a favorite area in my home, and I enjoy dressing it up with an eclectic style for the holidays.

The Table Runner

Hatch Table Runner | Stencil Napkins |

I’ve been crushing on this Hatch Table Runner from Target forever and finally added it to my collection. With lovely rose gold glimmer, it comes in two sizes – extra-long being perfect for our dining table. I love how striking my new stencil napkins look against metallic dots!

The Centerpiece

Clipped Loropetalum stems surround faux wheat stalks. Faux peonies and mums in oranges and rusts add color while heather and wisteria spikes add interest and contrast. Eucalyptus is a great sub for Loropetalum.

The Table Setting

Our good china is stacked on orange napkins from my Halloween table, and topped with preserved oak leaves and ripe Bartlett pears – why should pumpkins have all the fun?

You’ll find this Rosegold Silverware set on my Christmas list. Until Santa visits, I used a disposable set; the same look for a fraction of cost.

DIY Stencil Napkins

diy stenciled napkins

These DIY stencil napkins are very special to me, despite being new, as the fabric to make them was my mothers. I like the idea of a piece of my mom sharing Thanksgiving with us, from heaven.

What You’ll Need:

  • 18″ length of fabric per napkin
  • Stitch Witchery
  • Stencil
  • Tape
  • Pounce brush
  • Acrylic Paint

What You’ll Do:

stencil napkins

  1. For each napkin, cut a square of fabric to 18″x18″ square.
  2. Fold over fabric edges 1/4″ then again 1/2″. Press a deep crease.
  3. Cut a piece of Stitch Witchery the napkin side length and lay it under the folds – press to secure.
  4. Tape stencil to your fabric.
  5. Apply your stencil with a “pounce” brush and a thin layer of craft paint (too much will cause bleeding).
  6. Peel back the stencil. Dry.
  7. Set the paint with a hot iron.

Mini Bar

An uncomplicated drink station nearby ensures we’ll be celebrating all the things we’re thankful for, while DIY personalized wine glasses add family tradition.

How to use Vibrant Florals for Sweet, Enchanting Easter Table Decorations

Posted in HOLIDAYS, spring, TABLE SETTINGS, Tablescape
on March 21, 2018

Want to set a whimsical Easter table but want to keep the bunnies and chicks to a minimum? Here’s how to use vibrant florals in your Easter Table Decorations for a sweet, enchanting table.

Easter Table Decorations

Styling tablescapes throughout the year have become something I look forward to. Tablescapes are simple to put together, you can typically use what you have around the house, and I love how they help to immerse me in the holidays. There might be snow outside but inside; it’s all Easter! A few times a year I join  Chloe from Celebrate & Decorate for a Blog Hop where we all share our latest themed tablescape, and it’s time for our Spring Tablescape Blog Hop!

HOW TO USE VIBRANT FLORALS FOR SWEET ENCHANTING EASTER TABLE DECORATIONS

I’ve set a pastel Easter table setting, with vibrant tones,  to give you inspiration for your own Easter celebration. A little unusual for me, I stayed pretty traditional to Easter with the table setting but added a modern accent with the floral chandelier wreath full of color and romantic style.

THE ROOM

Although we usually have holiday meals in our dining room, Easter is typically more of a brunch for us – our breakfast area is lovely for that, with all kinds of natural light!

FLORAL CHANDELIER WREATH

Easter Table Decorations - chandelier wreath

The pendant light above our table is precisely right for this look, with its graceful arms and I love how the wreath sits just below the shade, letting a little light peek out between, highlighting the blooms.
Spring to me is all about color as everything comes alive – reds, blues, corals, yellows, and pinks all blend with teardrop greenery.

The floral wreath is such an easy project that makes a huge impact! The floral wreath is such an easy project that makes a huge impact to any setting.  Click HERE for instructions on how to make your own.

THE CENTERPIECE

Easter Table Decorations - centerpiece

Because of the grandiose nature of the wreath above the table, I kept the centerpiece simple. A paper mache bunny of white with a gold nose is surrounded by fresh blooms from my garden and a myriad of decorated eggs – some ornate, some simple.

THE TABLE COVERINGS

Easter Table Decorations - 2

I went with a natural table and a buffalo check table runner made from my napkin stash. I love how the blue adds a punch of color to the otherwise simple table covering and highlights the blues in the floral wreath.

THE PLACE SETTINGS

The settings are kept simple to not take away from the real stars of the table – the flowers.

Easter Table Decorations - Setting
You may recognize my DIY Painted-Pink dinner plates from our Christmas table. I’m still madly in love with them and have found them surprisingly versatile. Of course, in writing this I’ve realized that I’ve yet to share a tutorial on how I made them – I’m on it!

Simple white salad plates crown the pink dinnerware.

Royal blue napkins and vintage handkerchiefs tied with a tulle bow accented with a pretty butterfly clip complete the setting.

THE EXTRAS

We haven’t decided what we’ll be serving for brunch, but it will include refreshing fresh lemonade with lemon slices in tall glasses.

And, of course, no Easter celebration is complete without hot cross buns!

I can’t wait for Easter and the feeling of a new beginning that comes along with it. But mostly, I look forward to spending time with and making memories with my family.

thanksgiving table - place cards

As a blended family with busy, grown children, that also shares custody of our younger children, we celebrate Thanksgiving twice – once on Thanksgiving day and usually the week before. We often invite friends to join us and have affectionately named this day Ca-Merican Thanksgiving, combining my Canadian traditions with My American hubby’s. Our family looks forward to this celebration every year. This year was even more special as my bestie of 33 years was visiting from Canada. This girl and I go waaaaay back and will forever be friends if for no other reason then to protect our secrets. #SheKnowsTooMuch

We enjoyed a hectic visit with all kinds of shenanigans and even managed to fit in an overnight road trip! Her response to everything we saw in Washington DC? “I thought it would be bigger.” Just like a Canadian.

Finally, Ca-Merican Thanksgiving arrived, and it suddenly occurred to my foggy brain that I hadn’t given three seconds of thought to my Thanksgiving table decorations. #alottawine #stillrecovering

I know – the world would not end if I didn’t have a perfect table-setting, but my blog brain doesn’t work like that. No doubt you can relate! But what if you don’t have the tablecloth/charger/fine-China/Crystal wine glasses/etc., but still want to set a semi-formal table? Use what you have!

How to set a Semi-formal Thanksgiving Table (with informal stuff)

Add a tablecloth

thanksgiving table - runner

I found this runner last spring on clearance at Home Goods – it’s me to a “T” with lots of color and pattern.
thanksgiving table - length view
My tablecloth is another matter altogether. Whether you have a 10 feet long table such as this or are putting together multiple tables, I’ve yet to find an affordable cover that will fit. This year, I used curtains panels and layered them on top of one another. Here are some other ideas for runners and cloths:
  • bed sheets
  • blankets
  • long scarves
  • unfinished fabric
  • wrapping paper
  • craft and scrapbook paper

Make a centerpiece

thanksgiving table - centerpiece

thanksgiving table - centerpiece 1

Make a centerpiece of several colored pumpkins, both real and faux fabric, dollar store tealight candles, and glass bottles filled with 2-3 stems of faux flowers and eucalyptus stems. Even better? Use Fresh flower stems! Other centerpiece ideas:

  • A single row of lit candles
  • seasonal fruit
  • flowers laid out in a row, interspersed with candles or tealights

Pick a charger – or not

thanksgiving table

You don’t need a charger, but they give an additional layer of depth to the table. Find metallic chargers at Walmart or the dollar store for $.98 apiece during the holidays. I use these gold chargers for pretty much everything – they are a classic look that works for many occasions. Other charger ideas:
  • placemats
  • wrapping paper
  • cardstock or even fabric

Napkins

thanksgiving table - napkin with leaf sprig
I almost always use real fabric napkins to up the fancy-meter, no matter what else is on my table – paper plates, plastic plates, etc. If you don’t have any hanging around, you can achieve a fun look by layering paper napkins, folding a cocktail napkin over a dinner. Napkins rings are elegant when you tie a colorful piece of bakers twine or ribbon around your napkin.

Add your dishes

thanksgiving table - plate with charger

Place your Soup Bowl, Salad Plate, and Dinner Plate on a charger. Not serving soup? Skip the soup bowl. Serving coffee? Set a cup and saucer out. Go eclectic by mixing and matching your dinnerware instead of making them all the same.
thanksgiving table-eclectic plates
One of my favorite looks is to set a white dinner plate with a patterned or colored dessert or salad plate. In the past, I have used formal style plastic plates as well as disposable plates. I do have a set of China, but I only have eight place settings. To get around that, I used my everyday white dinnerware and alternated the plate patterns. Just go with it – An eclectic table can be fun and beautiful!

No matter what you’re using, you can up the elegance factor by setting your table correctly. Here’s a free cheat-sheet that you can download after subscribing to my newsletter. No spamming, I promise!
