DIY Honeycomb Christmas ornament

I’m excited to again be joining a group of super talented bloggers for My Dollar Store challenge – This month we’re sharing our ideas for DIY Christmas Ornaments, so be sure to scroll to the bottom for all of the Christmas inspiration you can handle.

DIY Christmas Ornaments - Honeycomb ornaments

There is something nostalgic and beautiful about hanging ornaments on the Christmas tree you’ve made yourself. Unlike the salt-dough or macaroni ornaments, I remember making as a kid, these Dollar Store DIY Christmas Ornaments,  with easy to make tassels and beads look as though they have intricate detailing but are a cinch to make (they take about 10 minutes each). They only require a few supplies you can pick up at Dollar Tree or likely already have, and need NO baking to impress!

HOW TO MAKE HONEYCOMB DIY CHRISTMAS ORNAMENTS

YOU WILL NEED:

DIY Christmas Ornaments - Materials

Dollar Store Items:

  • Tissue paper
  • Pony beads
  • Ribbon/Bakers’ Twine/Yarn

Other Items:

  • Scissors
  • Hot glue gun and glue
  • Pattern

START WITH A DIY TASSEL

DIY Tassel- Finished

To make the ornament hanger and DIY Tassel, wind your twine or ribbon loosely around your middle three fingers about 15-20 times. Slide the loops off your fingers then cut away from the skein.

DIY Tassel - wrap around hand

Tie a second piece of string, about 12″ long,  through the wrapped ribbon or string and secure with a knot making the DIY ornament hanger.

Wrap the third piece of twine, about 5″ long, around the full bundle to create the DIY tassel head.

Cut through the loops, and trim to the desired length.

DIY Tassel-completed

String pony beads on top of the tassel. Put aside.

PREPARE THE TISSUE PAPER

DIY Christmas Ornaments - Stack Tissue Paper

Stack 4-pieces of tissue paper. If using multiple patterns, ensure each piece is the same side up. Fold the stack in half. Repeat until you have a rectangle approximately 6″x4″.

DIY Christmas Ornaments - Fold Tissue Paper

TRACE + CUT + FOLD

Download and cut out the DIY Christmas ornaments pattern. Lay the straight edge of the pattern piece along the fold line of the rectangle. Trace the pattern. Using sharp scissors, cut the design from the tissue paper stack. DO NOT CUT THE FOLD.

DIY Christmas Ornament - Cut Pattern Out

Separate and count 18-pieces – Set the remainder aside for the second ornament. Fold the pieces in half, ensuring a deep crease.

DIY Christmas Ornaments - Fold

GLUE INSIDE

DIY Christmas Ornament - Glue Inside

Unfold each piece and lay it crease side down, placing a glue dot on the inside at the black marks shown on the pattern. Refold on the score line and gently press together. Repeat for remaining.

NOW THE OUTSIDE

DIY Christmas Ornament - Glue Outside

Place a glue dot on the outside areas at the pink marks shown on the pattern, then immediately lay a second ornament piece on top, pressing gently. Repeat fusing all parts into one stack.

ADD THE TASSLE

DIY Christmas Ornament - Glue into stack

Add a stream of glue down the center of the ornament. Lay the tassel down the center, placing the beads against the bottom of the ornament and begin to unfurl the ornament around the tassel. Tie a knot at the top of the tassel string, to create the hanging loop.

THE GRAND FINISH

DIY Christmas Ornament - Finished

Continue to unfurl the ornament until it wraps all the way around to form a circle, then add glue to the final layer at the pink dot areas outlined on the pattern. Press together.

YOU’RE DONE.

I’ve seen these ornaments everywhere lately, and I love that to look at them, they seem so complicated when they are not.

DIY Christmas Ornament

Hang them on your Christmas tree or put them out as decorations, give them as gifts, or amp up your Christmas wrapping ideas. No matter what you do, no one will guess how little effort or cost you put out!

my favorite things

Hi there! What a great day! It’s not only the day before an extended weekend for us, but also the day I’ve partnered with some of my favorite blogger friends to share our “My favorite Things Gift Guides” – Think Oprah without the car giveaway.  Everything I’m sharing today is stuff I either own and love or items on my own Christmas list for this year. I hope to help make your holiday shopping a little easier and give you gift ideas at every price point for everyone on your list, or yourself!

MY FAVORITE THINGS + CHRISTMAS WISH LIST

my favorite things - roomba

Our Roomba is one of two appliances I’ve asked for at Christmas. BEST GIFT EVER. With a dog, guinea pig, man, and three kids making a mess, and although it isn’t my method of vacuuming on short notice, it does a decent and daily cleaning for me allowing me to tackle other things. It does not fall down the stairs, it gets into corners like a champ, and exceeds my expectations in all regards.

my favorite things - kitchen aid mixer

The second appliance I’ve asked for at Christmas, I LOVE my mixer. Besides cupcakes, I’m not crazy about baking, but somehow, with a Kitchen Aid, it’s so much more fun. This year I’m adding a veggie spiralizer attachment!

Prybar

my favorite things - prybar

I had no idea how useful this tool would be until I had one! It’s great for pulling staples, or rogue nails that don’t want to come out. It was essential for our staircase makeover.

Leopard Print Sweater

my favorite things - leopard print sweater

Anyone who knows me knows my love for leopard print and knows on any given day I’ll be wearing at least one animal-print item. This sweater holds its shape, is relatively lightweight, and, can dress up or down. My favorite thing is the price point!

Dry Shampoo – For Brunettes

my favorite things - dry shampoo

We all know dry shampoo is the BEST is magical, but as a brunette, I’ve always struggled with the white residue with each application. Those days are over with a tinted dry shampoo just perfect for us brunettes! Not a brunette? They have a tint for you too!

Benefit “Porefressional”

my favorite things - benefit porefessional

Hooked after receiving a sample of this primer in my stocking last year, it’s silky, velvety texture hides pores, and fades away fine lines!

Imagine Dragons – Origins

my favorite things - imagine dragons origins cd

I’m a 48-year old woman who loves pop music- I always will! I listen to many artists, but lately, I’ve loaded my playlist with a ton of Imagine Dragons. They have such a fun, catchy, versatile sound, with a song for every moment of the soundtrack of your life. If you happen to see me driving, I’m not yelling, I’m singing. And, I sound fantastic.

Against All Grain Celebrations Cookbook

my favorite things - against all grains celebrations cookbook

Diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis last year, I’ve made numerous dietary changes – today, I follow a diet close to Paleo. As a foodie type person, I’ve spent the better part of the year learning how to cook for myself and our family all over again. This book has saved me in so many ways and taught me how to follow a best-for-my-body diet but one good tasting. Whether or not you’re grain-free, you’ll find every recipe to be foolproof and delicious!

Kendra Scott Elisa Filagree Necklace

my favorite things - elisa filagree pendant

A gift from my husband, this necklace is around my neck on a constant basis. A favorite accessory, it goes with everything, can be dressed up or down, and is a little bit dainty. A whole year in rotation and I don’t see myself taking it off anytime soon!

Milked Cashews Non-Dairy Milk

my favorite things - milked cashew milk

It’s amazing how much one misses cereal and milk when one can not have cereal and milk! While searching for non-dairy milk, I found this. It doesn’t contain guar gum or soy – neither of which I tolerate well. This milk comes in other nut varieties such as almond and hazelnut.

VictSing Essential Oil Diffuser

my favorite things - essential oil diffuser

We love our essential oils, and this diffuser helps us to enjoy them. I love the large size water well. I fill it every few days or when I switch scents. It has multiple light settings and three timer settings, with auto shut off. I have a few other models in our home, but this one is my favorite.

Pink Velvet Pumps

my favorite things - pink velvet shoe

I’m already planning outfits including these adorable pumps – Come on, Santa, don’t let me down! If you’re a review reader, they are cute, comfortable and you can’t beat the price! They also come in gray – they may both be going on my list!

Mini Purse

my favorite things - mini purse

I’m a mini purse carrier and own a navy version of this exact purse – I receive constant compliments on it. Although I still stuff my bag to capacity, the smaller size prevents the neck and shoulder pain I was experiencing with a larger bag. Let’s not forget how adorable it is!

Rosegold Silverware

my favorite things - rose gold flatware

As I mentioned in my Thanksgiving tablescape post, despite finding a fun disposable alternative, this rose gold flatware is a top item on my Christmas list. I love the clean lines and can’t wait to style tables within the new year!

Dough Bowl

my favorite things - dough bowl

I have been coveting a vintage wooden dough bowl FOREVER. This year, I’ve put a few stars next to the “dough bowl” entry on my Christmas list. Crossing my fingers, I’m not on the naughty list!

Thanks for letting me share my favorite things (and the things I wish to find under the tree)! I hope you found a few ideas for one of your favorite people, or even for yourself!

But wait, before you go be sure to check out the other “My Favorite Things” lists!
