my favorite things

Hi there! What a great day! It’s not only the day before an extended weekend for us, but also the day I’ve partnered with some of my favorite blogger friends to share our “My favorite Things Gift Guides” – Think Oprah without the car giveaway.  Everything I’m sharing today is stuff I either own and love or items on my own Christmas list for this year. I hope to help make your holiday shopping a little easier and give you gift ideas at every price point for everyone on your list, or yourself!

MY FAVORITE THINGS + CHRISTMAS WISH LIST

my favorite things - roomba

Our Roomba is one of two appliances I’ve asked for at Christmas. BEST GIFT EVER. With a dog, guinea pig, man, and three kids making a mess, and although it isn’t my method of vacuuming on short notice, it does a decent and daily cleaning for me allowing me to tackle other things. It does not fall down the stairs, it gets into corners like a champ, and exceeds my expectations in all regards.

my favorite things - kitchen aid mixer

The second appliance I’ve asked for at Christmas, I LOVE my mixer. Besides cupcakes, I’m not crazy about baking, but somehow, with a Kitchen Aid, it’s so much more fun. This year I’m adding a veggie spiralizer attachment!

Prybar

my favorite things - prybar

I had no idea how useful this tool would be until I had one! It’s great for pulling staples, or rogue nails that don’t want to come out. It was essential for our staircase makeover.

Leopard Print Sweater

my favorite things - leopard print sweater

Anyone who knows me knows my love for leopard print and knows on any given day I’ll be wearing at least one animal-print item. This sweater holds its shape, is relatively lightweight, and, can dress up or down. My favorite thing is the price point!

Dry Shampoo – For Brunettes

my favorite things - dry shampoo

We all know dry shampoo is the BEST is magical, but as a brunette, I’ve always struggled with the white residue with each application. Those days are over with a tinted dry shampoo just perfect for us brunettes! Not a brunette? They have a tint for you too!

Benefit “Porefressional”

my favorite things - benefit porefessional

Hooked after receiving a sample of this primer in my stocking last year, it’s silky, velvety texture hides pores, and fades away fine lines!

Imagine Dragons – Origins

my favorite things - imagine dragons origins cd

I’m a 48-year old woman who loves pop music- I always will! I listen to many artists, but lately, I’ve loaded my playlist with a ton of Imagine Dragons. They have such a fun, catchy, versatile sound, with a song for every moment of the soundtrack of your life. If you happen to see me driving, I’m not yelling, I’m singing. And, I sound fantastic.

Against All Grain Celebrations Cookbook

my favorite things - against all grains celebrations cookbook

Diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis last year, I’ve made numerous dietary changes – today, I follow a diet close to Paleo. As a foodie type person, I’ve spent the better part of the year learning how to cook for myself and our family all over again. This book has saved me in so many ways and taught me how to follow a best-for-my-body diet but one good tasting. Whether or not you’re grain-free, you’ll find every recipe to be foolproof and delicious!

Kendra Scott Elisa Filagree Necklace

my favorite things - elisa filagree pendant

A gift from my husband, this necklace is around my neck on a constant basis. A favorite accessory, it goes with everything, can be dressed up or down, and is a little bit dainty. A whole year in rotation and I don’t see myself taking it off anytime soon!

Milked Cashews Non-Dairy Milk

my favorite things - milked cashew milk

It’s amazing how much one misses cereal and milk when one can not have cereal and milk! While searching for non-dairy milk, I found this. It doesn’t contain guar gum or soy – neither of which I tolerate well. This milk comes in other nut varieties such as almond and hazelnut.

VictSing Essential Oil Diffuser

my favorite things - essential oil diffuser

We love our essential oils, and this diffuser helps us to enjoy them. I love the large size water well. I fill it every few days or when I switch scents. It has multiple light settings and three timer settings, with auto shut off. I have a few other models in our home, but this one is my favorite.

Pink Velvet Pumps

my favorite things - pink velvet shoe

I’m already planning outfits including these adorable pumps – Come on, Santa, don’t let me down! If you’re a review reader, they are cute, comfortable and you can’t beat the price! They also come in gray – they may both be going on my list!

Mini Purse

my favorite things - mini purse

I’m a mini purse carrier and own a navy version of this exact purse – I receive constant compliments on it. Although I still stuff my bag to capacity, the smaller size prevents the neck and shoulder pain I was experiencing with a larger bag. Let’s not forget how adorable it is!

Rosegold Silverware

my favorite things - rose gold flatware

As I mentioned in my Thanksgiving tablescape post, despite finding a fun disposable alternative, this rose gold flatware is a top item on my Christmas list. I love the clean lines and can’t wait to style tables within the new year!

Dough Bowl

my favorite things - dough bowl

I have been coveting a vintage wooden dough bowl FOREVER. This year, I’ve put a few stars next to the “dough bowl” entry on my Christmas list. Crossing my fingers, I’m not on the naughty list!

Thanks for letting me share my favorite things (and the things I wish to find under the tree)! I hope you found a few ideas for one of your favorite people, or even for yourself!

But wait, before you go be sure to check out the other “My Favorite Things” lists!

stencil napkin tutorial

Hi Friends! In our family, we feast on two Thanksgiving dinners! Thanksgiving Day we spend at a fun family gathering with 30+ of my in-laws. But, first, we have dinner at home, dubbed Ca-merican Thanksgiving – Canadian and American – since we have some of each! Sometimes, it’s a bigger affair, but this year, it’s our family of 7+.

Hatch Table Runner | Stencil Napkins |

I’ve been crushing on this Hatch Table Runner from Target forever and finally added it to my collection. With lovely rose gold glimmer, it comes in two sizes – extra-long being perfect for our dining table. I love how striking my new stencil napkins look against metallic dots!

The Centerpiece

Clipped Loropetalum stems surround faux wheat stalks. Faux peonies and mums in oranges and rusts add color while heather and wisteria spikes add interest and contrast. Eucalyptus is a great sub for Loropetalum.

The Table Setting

Our good china is stacked on orange napkins from my Halloween table, and topped with preserved oak leaves and ripe Bartlett pears – why should pumpkins have all the fun?

You’ll find this Rosegold Silverware set on my Christmas list. Until Santa visits, I used a disposable set; the same look for a fraction of cost.

DIY Stencil Napkins

diy stenciled napkins

These DIY stencil napkins are very special to me, despite being new, as the fabric to make them was my mothers. I like the idea of a piece of my mom sharing Thanksgiving with us, from heaven.

What You’ll Need:

  • 18″ length of fabric per napkin
  • Stitch Witchery
  • Stencil
  • Tape
  • Pounce brush
  • Acrylic Paint

What You’ll Do:

stencil napkins

  1. For each napkin, cut a square of fabric to 18″x18″ square.
  2. Fold over fabric edges 1/4″ then again 1/2″. Press a deep crease.
  3. Cut a piece of Stitch Witchery the napkin side length and lay it under the folds – press to secure.
  4. Tape stencil to your fabric.
  5. Apply your stencil with a “pounce” brush and a thin layer of craft paint (too much will cause bleeding).
  6. Peel back the stencil. Dry.
  7. Set the paint with a hot iron.

Mini Bar

An uncomplicated drink station nearby ensures we’ll be celebrating all the things we’re thankful for, while DIY personalized wine glasses add family tradition.

Christmas is in 62 Days

Today, I am sharing a beautiful homemade advent calendar made from simple Dollar Store items that can be reused every year. Metal favor buckets (from the wedding aisle) are the perfect way to create a customized Christmas countdown calendar. This homemade advent calendar is made with 25 little buckets for you to fill up for each day in December. There are so many different you can use to fill an advent calendar – this one uses small treats – but you could just as easily fill the buckets with activity ideas or small toys.

I got so far ahead of myself that I even wrapped up a few little presents in my favorite wrapping paper – I hope I can find it again this year! I also printed off a sheet of fun gift tags from last year. Want to download them, too?  Get these adorable Christmas Gift Tags for free –  click HERE to get them! Now on to the how-to!

How to Make a Homemade Advent Calendar

homemade advent calendar - materials

You’ll need:

  • 12″x 24″ rug or piece of foam board
  • white paint
  • 25- metal buckets (9 packages from the dollar tree) with tags and ribbon
  • decorative pattern file folder or cardstock
  • Scissors or 2″ paper punch
  • bakers twine
  • Number stickers – I used something similar to this
  • small hooks with adhesive backing
  • ribbon
  • 2-small eye screws
  • 2 – 12″x 1″ pieces of wood
  • 2 – 24″x 1″ pieces of wood

Prepare the Board

Paint the board or posterboard white. Let dry.

Make the Tags

Cut out 25 cardstock circles and punch a hole in the top of each card.

Apply the number stickers 1 through 25 to the unprinted side of the tags included with the buckets. Then, stack the numbered circle over the cardstock and thread together with a piece of baker’s twine.

Add the Buckets

diy advent calendar

Remove the handles from all 25 buckets.

do it yourself advent calendar

Thread the number tags through one side of the bucket tabs used to hold the handles. Fold the flap over to prevent the tag string from coming off, then, add a loop of baker’s twine to the other tab to be used for hanging.

Position and stick the hooks evenly onto the board. I used a 5-4-5-4-7 pattern, but use what looks best to you.

Add trim pieces around the rug to create a frame using glue then screw eye screws into the top and thread ribbon through for hanging.

I added some snowflakes to each of my buckets, giving my homemade advent calendar the final touch I was looking for.

Once completed, hang the buckets on the hooks and fill with your favorite treats, toys or activities!

Now I’m just sitting here waiting for December 1st to roll around so I can start using it! How about you – are you thinking about Christmas yet?
