I woke up this morning and my first thought was “Holy crapola” (my thoughts are less than virtuous upon waking) “It’s Week #5 of the One Room Challenge. I now have seven short days to complete my list, which is still rather long, style my room, take pictures and share it with all of you.” It all seemed so exhausting that I went back to sleep for another hour. #Eeek. #NotsureifImscaredorexcited.

So, I’m going to keep this short. For those of you who may be new here or are just joining us, here’s the quick story. We’re turning our ugly formal dining room, currently being used as a poorly designed playroom with dining room furniture, into an actual playroom with dining room potential – aka a multi-purpose room! Week #1 I shared my dreams and ideas, and I was so excited to hear that you all “got” my vision! Week #2 was all about sharing the plans and my crazy to-do list. Week #3 had a lot of talk about built-ins.  Week #4 I was able to brag about my new light, and the fixtures started rolling in!

This week we accomplished a bit more than I realized, especially considering I had an entire household of people with the stomach flu and a birthday right smack in the middle of it. I was down for 24 hours, but somehow, it seemed like I’d been down for 72 hours afterward! #Momsgottakeepwell.

I’m keeping it short – I still have an awful lot to do, mainly involving a table which currently looks like this.

Still, here’s where we are:

The built-ins are done! I can’t TELL you how excited I am to be finished with them!

Well, I’m nearly done with them – the knobs have yet to be installed, but STILL.

I’ve been playing around with a teeny bit of styling – nothing is set in stone yet!

I’ve picked up a few accessories.

The chairs have arrived.

The book/bar cart has found a permanent home.

The toy bins are ready for fun things!

There’s a ton going on!

multi-purpose room built-ins

Let’s take a look at our list – I need the added stress more motivation!

built-ins || these will be along the main wall and visible from all angles
table || build a restoration hardware table with a fold-out top
storage/dining benches || benches that will work for dining and toy storage
new dining chairs || side chairs useable as dining chairs
artwork || something fun but appropriate for a dining room
mobile storage cart || this will work as the primary book storage for the playroom
paint || a neutral color that reflects natural light and a colorful feature wall
rug || pattern, texture, and color
lighting || less “chandelier” like overhead, table lamps and recessed lighting

window treatments || updated and cordless

So, let’s say we meet back here next week – same time, same place for a little ol’ reveal? Bring wine! And cookies!

  1. Kim the chairs are fantastic and I can’t wait for the reveal! I love the direction the space is going in. As a fellow ORC participant it’s been wonderful to gather some fantastic inspiration. I’d love for you to share your progress at Thoughts of Home on Thursday. Our readers would love to see it. The gathering is at http://www.decortoadore.net
